MySQL
We like to use MySQL as our database
of choice whenever possible because of it's power, reliability
and the fact that it is open source (which
means free). Another nice thing about MySQL is that it will
work on most any operating system.
Our
database developer has been trained by MySQL AB and knows
how
to set
up the server
and
develop
the database
to provide the best speed and reliability. We have
set up master/slave systems which are used for redundancy,
backup
and for increased speed.

Microsoft Access
Microsoft Access is a powerful
database and we use it when MySQL or MSSQL is not an option. It
is usually scaled towards smaller sites that will not have
a lot
of simultaneous
visitors since it will only allow 20 connections at a time. We
have used it to develop shopping carts, forums and much more.
One
nice thing about using Access is that it can be used in
doing mail merges with Microsoft
Office products. (Using
an ODBC connections, we can connect Access to a MySQL or
MSSQL database and populate the Access database to use in
a mail merge too)
Microsoft SQL Server
Microsoft's SQL Server is a great solution
when you need a large robust database. Equipment and
licenses are expensive so hosting a site with SQL Server is
generally higher. We
have limited experience with MSSQL but are learning more everyday. We
currently use it on a few sites where we use the MegaBBS forum.
